The Importance Of Vitamin E In Skin Care!

Vitamin E (chemical name tocopherol) is one of the most well known and researched antioxidants, both when taken orally and when used in skincare products. It is fat-soluble and available in various forms, with the most biologically active being Alpha-Tocopherol. Some of its capabilities when applied topically include:

  • Protects the epidermis from early stages of ultraviolet light damage
  • Increases the efficacy of active sunscreen ingredients
  • Reduces the formation of free radicals upon skin exposure to UVA rays and other sources of skin stress
  • Prevents the oxidation of fats, a leading source of cell membrane damage in the body
  • Reduces trans-epidermal water loss from skin and strengthens the skin's barrier function
  • Protects the skin barrier's oil (lipid) balance during the cleansing process
  • Reduces the severity of sunburn

Clearly, various forms of vitamin E are major players as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. When it comes to antioxidants,

there are internal benefits from dietary or supplement consumption and external benefits from topical application. As important as vitamin E is for skin, it is best used in combination with other antioxidants, including vitamin C, green tea, coenzyme Q10, and many others.

Vitamin E is one of those vitamins that does not cause any disease by its deficiency in the body, but even a small amount of this vitamin is hugely beneficial for the immune system as its strong antioxidant properties protect any part of the body which might be susceptible to oxidative damage.

Vitamin E regulates the retinol level in humans. Retinol, which is a derivative of vitamin A, is essential for healthy skin, mucous membranes and proper vision. Decreases in retinol levels cause the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell, which causes toxic effects in the cell. Vitamin E curbs this oxidation process and restores normal levels of retinol.

Vitamin E provides an essential function in cellular respiration of all muscles and is vital in the production of biological energy. It also strengthens capillary walls, provides nourishment to cells and protects red blood cells from destruction by toxins in the blood.

It is necessary to have some amount of fat in our diet to help absorb vitamin E. Unfortunately, the fad of losing weight has been making people cut fat from their diet drastically. Such people may get the desired figure, but the effects of loss of vitamin E are obvious from their dry skin and damaged hair. The deficiency of vitamin E results in dry skin, easy bruising, eczema, psoriasis, PMS, poor wound healing and hot flushes.

Vitamin E is one of those ingredients that pack so much power, it can be found in just about any beauty and skincare product… and with good reason. This antioxidant, fat-soluble vitamin can treat everything from anti-aging woes to scars and other skin conditions. Luckily, this wonder ingredient isn't hard to come by and can be used on a daily basis for better skin and better health (Seacra Enterprises Inc., © 2010).
