Cold Sores

Cold Sores (herpes labialis) are small blisters that form on the lips or skin around the mouth, nose and the chin, and are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Infection usually occurs during childhood with the virus residing in the nerves, however the initial infection does not carry any symptoms, and only around a third of infected people experience cold sores. The condition is quite contagious (transmitted through contact with saliva or the blisters) and while it can be managed, it unfortunately cannot be cured.

Cold sore outbreaks usually recur in the same location, and can be triggered by:

  • Illness due to low immune function and poor diet and nutrition (such as the flu and chest infections)
  • Sun/UV exposure
  • Hormonal changes (such as menstrual-related)
  • Cold and windy conditions
  • Lip trauma (such as sunburn)
  • Stress (physical or emotional)

Initial symptoms include fever, tiredness, sore throat, swollen neck glands, and pain inside the mouth and gums. However, the most obvious are the blisters that can form in and around the mouth. Cold sores tend to break out in cycles, where the affected area begins to itch and tingle 1-2 days before the collection of painful blisters begin to form, which then burst and eventually dry up over the next 7-10 days.
