Stretch Marks

Stretch Marks (or Striae) are a form of scarring that occur when the dermis (deeper layer of skin) becomes torn as a result of rapid expansion/contraction of the skin. The skin’s collagen fibres (connective tissue) are pulled beyond the limits of their elasticity and become stretched and misshapen.

Stretch marks initially appear as long and narrow red, pink or purple lines/streaks which over time fade to white or silver, and range in length from a few centimetres to a few inches depending on severity. While stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, they most commonly develop on areas of the skin where large deposits of fat are stored, such as the upper arms, underarms, back, breasts, abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs.

Main causes of stretch marks include:

  • Pregnancy – Around 50-90% of women experience stretch marks during or after their pregnancy, most commonly on the abdomen as a result of the rapidly-expanding baby during the last trimester. Apart from the abdomen, pregnancy-related stretch marks (striae gravidarum) can also appear on the thighs, hips, breasts and buttocks as a result of pregnancy weight gain.
  • Puberty and adolescence – The rapid growth associated with growth spurts of young teens can result in stretch marks, especially in the breasts and hips.
  • Rapid weight change – The overstretching of the skin that accompanies rapid weight gain causes stretch marks to develop, and is unfortunately not helped by rapid weight loss either.
  • Sports – Certain sports or activities (such as bodybuilding) that involve putting the body under deliberate stress by stretching and contracting the muscles, can cause stretch marks especially in the underarms area.
  • Medical conditions – Certain medical conditions (such as Marfan syndrome or Cushing’s syndrome) can cause skin tissue to experience reduced elasticity or the body to experience hormonal rapid weight gain, thus weakening the collagen fibres and increasing the risk of stretch marks.
