Age / Sun Spots

Age/Sun Spots (also known as Liver Spots or Solar Lentigines) are flat brown, black or grey spots most commonly found on sun-exposed areas of the skin such as the face, neck, shoulders, back, décolletage and back of the hands. As they tend to group together, they present as dark areas of pigmentation usually uneven in shape and skin tone.

They are an undesirable consequence of the skin’s natural ageing process combined with frequent and prolonged sun exposure, or exposure to other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light such as tanning beds. Age spots occur when melanin (the pigment that regulates skin colour) has been over-stimulated as a natural defence to UV light, and begins to clump in higher concentrations in the skin. Another contributing factor can be skin trauma.

Age spots are commonly found in people over the age of 40 although most damage generally occurs in a person’s youth before the age of 18, especially if they frequently spend large amounts of time in the sun without protection. This damage begins to surface in a person’s 30’s as sun or age spots. Lighter complexions are at greater risk of developing age spots, although darker complexions and people who tan easily are not immune from this condition.

  • Step 1 – We invest significant time in your initial skin consultation to listen and fully understand your skin concerns, identify the contributing factors, your needs and goals.
