Rosacea and acne rosacea is a non-contagious skin inflammation that mainly affects the face (forehead, cheeks, chin, and especially the nose). This condition causes the small facial blood vessels (capillaries) to become enlarged and visible, giving a permanent red flush to the skin (and in some cases forming small pus-filled bumps and lumps) with a burning or stinging sensation being felt in the affected area. Vascular Redness is diffused redness on the skin due to impaired capillary function.

While rosacea affects people of all skin types and conditions, it most commonly occurs in fair complexions (especially those of Anglo-Celtic origin), and usually develops between the ages of 30 and 60 with the condition worsening with age. People who smoke or have a family history are also more likely to develop rosacea. Women are more susceptible than men, however in severe cases the latter can develop a reddened and enlarged bulbous nose (rhinophyma). Rosacea can often be mistaken for sunburn, rosy cheeks and even acne, and while it is not entirely curable if left untreated it can worsen over time, potentially even affecting the eyes.

The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, with speculation ranging from microscopic Dermodex mites on the skin’s surface, all the way to intestinal bacteria. Some factors that can trigger and aggravate rosacea and/or vascular redness include:

  • Poor diet and nutrition (incl. spicy and inflammatory foods, alcohol, hot drinks such a tea and coffee)
  • Emotions such stress, fear, anxiety, embarrassment and anger
  • Temperature extremes (hot and cold)
  • Sun exposure / sunburn
  • Strong winds
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Use of unsuitable or aggressive skincare products or cosmetics
  • Certain medications that dilate blood vessels, such as for blood pressure
  • Overheating, including in bed at night time
  • Impaired skin barrier function
