Sun Damage

Sun Damage occurs from prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun?s rays, and is especially prevalent in people who regularly sunbathe, work outdoors or do not regularly use sunscreen or sun protective clothing and hats. Even if one works in an office, some sun damage does occur and this applies even on overcast days. Damage can range from wrinkling, discolouration (irregular pigmentation), sunburn and in the most serious cases can even lead to skin cancer. Skin tolerance to sun exposure differs according to skin type and condition, however all skin types suffer from sun damage at varying levels.

Tanned skin that results from sun-tanning or tanning beds is actually a sign of skin damage. The sun?s UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, damaging the dermis (deeper layer) and accelerating ageing by breaking down the collagen and elastin, which keep the skin firm and smooth, as well as damaging the DNA structure of the cells. UVB rays penetrate into the epidermis (surface layer) and stimulate the skin?s protective response (excess melanin production) leading to sun or liver spots.

This damage does not become apparent until years later when the damaged layers finally rise to the skin surface, so sun over-exposure when we are young is often the cause of sun-damaged skin later in life. Researchers have discovered that UV exposure is responsible for up to 80% of skin ageing. Intense sun-bathing or extended periods outdoors (without sun protection) during the hottest parts of the day can lead to sunburn, which is actually a thermal burn to the epidermis (outer layer of the skin). First-degree sunburns are usually characterised by redness of the skin, while second-degree sunburns can lead to blistering of the skin and are very painful as the damage has reached deep into the tissues to the nerve endings.
